Navigating the World of Health: Essential Insights

Updated: Jan 20

"We often pay attention to our health only when we’re unwell, neglecting to nurture our well-being during times of health" - Light on Life, B.K.S. Iyengar.

He reminds us that true health is a continuous journey, requiring consistent care and awareness rather than just a reaction to illness

Insight of how fragile our body's health can be

In today’s fast-paced world, our understanding of health has expanded beyond just physical fitness. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." This broader perspective emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach that considers every aspect of our well-being. Everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves to enjoy the highest standard of health, don't you think?

Beyond merely being free from illness, true health involves nurturing a balanced state of mind, body, and spirit. In what areas do you think you need improvement? What environments or habits might you be in that affect you negatively? The connection between your mental, emotional, and physical health is an ongoing circle, even though we might not fully know it. This highlights the need to address mental well-being as a vital component of overall wellness.

Often, we underestimate the impact of stress and our environment on our health until our bodies show signs of illness. We take our health for granted. We are, in a way, taught from an early age that we have to be as "productive and providing as we can" in one way or the other, for "society"; we then naturally neglect our emotional state and stress levels, until we realize "Oh, I' m sick!". Physical illness is the last sign our body gives after being in constant stress or unhealthiness, as our emotional and mental bodies are usually affected first.

How many people do you know who rely on a few drinks after work to ease the stress? Or some who are too tired to start exercising? These are just two basic examples of how we may not be properly coping with the everyday demands, relying then on unhealthy habits, or neglecting our health. Let's also emphasize the importance of mindfulness and self-awareness, as our mental and emotional states significantly influence our overall health. Were we taught to pay attention to our mental health when we were children? Do we take time to work on the different aspects encompassing our health?

Health is not just about physical appearance; it's about feeling empowered and strong in body, mind, and spirit.

It starts with making those small but steady everyday changes and reflecting on possible personal and environmental risk factors. For example, start watching what you eat and try to eat cleaner and greener. Or try to exercise a few times a week, and move your body with whatever physical activity suits you. Educate yourself about the health risk factors of bad habits, such as smoking, drinking, or eating trans fats. Try to reflect on aspects that may be giving you stress and unease, as they will affect you sooner or later. Finally, reflect on your mindset and look towards being more optimistic. These are just some examples when considering health and how to cope with it. More in-depth information can be posted in the future.

When we prioritize our health, we enhance our ability to concentrate and improve our resiliency, happiness, and attitude toward life. It's a virtuous cycle – the healthier we are, the better we can care for ourselves and others, and the more confident and vital we become during this process.

Remember, achieving and maintaining optimal health is an ongoing journey, requiring the cultivation of healthy habits, positive mindsets, and a commitment to self-care. By prioritizing your (and only yours, serving for you) well-being and embracing a holistic approach to health, you can unlock your full potential and become your best version. Think about it, when do you feel well and energized? Are there any aspects of your life that you would like to change? Do you have already an existing chronic illness you need to manage and how do you do it? Does your environment help you grow internally? Why or why not? All these are just simple questions to ask yourself and scan how you feel in different aspects of your life.

It is important to educate yourself about health and wellness. It is important to try and "scan" your body for what it needs.

Health is to be able to advocate for oneself, health is beauty, health is happiness, and most importantly, a privilege.
